To Learn About Life...
Just Watch the Trees
I love painting trees. They add so much life to my landscape paintings.
My favorite to paint are fall trees with all their glorious colors. But the fresh green leaves of spring are almost as exciting with their promise of a new beginning.
The trees of summer give their own special feeling of warm, easy days that seem to go on well into the night.
And the stark, bare trees of winter remind us that all things eventually come full circle.
It reminds me of life.
In the spring of our lives, we're fresh and new and green. We're delicate and small. We're vulnerable and need special care and protection to ensure we continue to grow in a healthy way.
By the time we reach our "summer", we're more established. We're in our prime as reflected by our rich green leaves. There's no mistaking the fact that we've survived our delicate infancy and childhood and are now stronger than we have ever been. This is the time some of us even create "little trees" of our own.
When we come to the "autumn" of our life, we've transitioned yet again. Some slower than others, but eventually we all reach autumn. This is a bittersweet time.
Our bright colors are a reflection of all the wisdom and experience we've gained. We have more to offer now than any other time that's come before. However, we also have lived long enough to know that our leaves won't last forever.
Eventually, winter comes.
Things aren't as easy as they used to be.
Our limbs are bare and brittle, but there is something very liberating about stripping away the leaves and revealing our structure.
We stand stark against the backdrop of the world.
The fact that we're still here is a testament to our strength and endurance.
We've weathered the storms of spring and summer.
We've basked in the glory of autumn, and through that, we've gained a knowledge only achievable through the living of life.
Although we are not what we used to be, and there is an acceptance of our fate, we embody the culmination of the four seasons and have witnessed it all. And for that, we are grateful because we now know that when spring comes around, there will be new leaves and the cycle will start over again.
