Why Swim Against the Current

When You Can Go With the Flow?

I enjoy creating art. When I'm painting, whether it's digitally or on canvas, time seems to stop. Everything around me drops away, and it's like I'm in a warm, safe cocoon.

There's never been anything else that I've done that's taken me so completely away from reality.

And when I come back down to earth, there's usually a beautiful piece of art staring back at me, and I have very little recollection of exactly how it came to be.

It's as if it's being created through me instead of by me.

I've heard others speak of this, and they sometimes call it being in the flow.

It's truly a magical place where your efforts seem to be exponentially compounded, and whatever you're doing while in that state of mind happens almost effortlessly. So much so that you'll surprise yourself when you snap back to your senses.

It's a very elusive place though.

It's not a state of mind you can just conjure at will. You have to be inspired and relaxed and most of all, without distractions.

If you try too hard, you won't find it. If you feel rushed or irritable, you won't get there. But when things line up just right, you'll slip right in almost like when you drift off to sleep.

One minute your fully awake and conscience and the next...voila, you're in dreamland.

Have you ever experienced this?

If not, I encourage you to try new things until you identify something that you love to do. That's the first step.

You have to be passionate about what you're doing before you can access this magical state.

Then, depending on the activity, find a secluded place where you can immerse yourself in it. It's doesn't have to be a solitary activity either. If you're musically inclined for example, jamming out with your band can put you in the flow as well.

Or you could be outside in nature. It all depends on what you're doing.

And turn off your phone. Nothing kills the flow like a notification or call.

Seriously, just disconnect from the world for a little while, and you'll likely find all the inspiration and passion you've been searching for.

So, this week try something new or revisit something you used to love to do, and see if you can lose yourself in it for an hour or two.

You'll come out the other side feeling like you've just spent an afternoon at the spa, and you'll probably have something pretty cool to show for it too.

So until next week...look for inspiration in all that you do, and every chance you get, go with the flow!
